Habitat

Upland Prairie & Savannas, Oregon White Oak Woodlands

Description

This woodland prairie mix is composed of native species adapted to the partial shade conditions found within Oregon white oak habitats. It includes two of our most common and reliable native woodland grasses, Blue Wildrye and Sitka Brome, along with a diverse selection of woodland-compatible wildflowers and forbs.

Because Oregon white oak trees leaf out later than many other deciduous trees in the Willamette Valley, early spring wildflowers in this mix benefit from dappled sunlight during the critical early growing season. Species such as Camas, Avens, and Iris provide valuable early-season color and nectar resources that attract native pollinators as the woodland begins to emerge from winter dormancy.

As the canopy fills in and shaded conditions increase, taller native species including Fern-leaved Lomatium, Tall Meadowrue, and Celery-leaved Licorice Root create important structural habitat for wildlife. Their upright stems provide perching sites for native songbirds such as White-crowned Sparrows, while dense foliage and broad leaves offer sheltered nesting habitat for species like towhees.

Designed for oak savanna restoration, shaded prairie enhancement, and woodland edge habitat projects, this mix supports pollinators, birds, and native biodiversity while creating a naturalistic and ecologically rich understory planting.

Note: This mix can also be ordered without grasses.
